Due to the fast-paced lifestyle of modern society, people are suffering from life stress and need entertainment to release it. Since gambling is one of the entertainment can release stress, the population of gambler has become millions. However, problem gambling has become a serious social problem. This essay will discuss the negative effects of gambling which include financial and health problems. Then it will discuss the solution for gambling, which includes governments’ regulation, self-control and education. Problem gambling causes financial problem, which can lead to crime and family issues. Firstly, Problem gamblers have some behaviours and thoughts to support their gambling, such as spending more money and time on gambling than†¦show more content†¦In addition, problem gamblers also consume more medical resources, such as emergency department visits (as sited in Black, Shaw, McCormick Allen, 2013). Furthermore, gamblers are more likely to have substance abuse. More time gamblers spend on gambling, more likely they will have substance abuse (Turner, Macdonald, Bartoshuk Zangeneh, 2008, p. 233). There are several solutions for gambling. The first solution is governments’ regulation. Governments have taken measures such as limiting gamblers’ access to money, introducing cashless gaming, and limiting the rate of loss (Healey, 2011, p. 14). For example, Australia have banned ATMs and EFTPOS in casinos, and set poker machine’s bet limit to $10 (Healey, 2011, p. 9). In addition, Australian governments also use financial sanctions to the states which have not taken these measures (Healey, 2011, p. 9). Furthermore, Australian government have introduced pre-commitment system which allows gamblers to set time and money limit. According to the Productivity Commission, pre-commitment system is a very effective option to minimize the negative effect that caused by problem gambling (as sited in Healey, 2011, p. 11).
